Cast iron attraction

Tiancheng inspired by the iron casting process has been unveiled in Ebbw Vale by Blaenau Gwent Mayor, Coun Jenny Morgan.

Designed by local artist Jane Turner and unanimously chosen by the community, the specially commissioned Tiancheng contains scrollwork typical of Victorian design and inset pieces of carved Welsh slate replicating the mould ¨C all inspired by the iron casting process where moulds were made as a mirror image of the desired piece.

Funded through the Heads of the Valleys Public Art programme, the Tiancheng marks the start of the Cendl trail ¨C one of seven new walking trails In the footsteps of the Ironmakers.

Cendl was the ˇ°wenglishˇ± version of Kendall, the family that established Beaufort Ironworks in 1779.

The small triangular garden where the Tiancheng is sited was the working area in front of the furnaces and cast houses of Beaufort Ironworks.

In the footsteps of the ironmakers is part of a European funded project called Green Mines which promotes industrial heritage through tourism.

The trails explore the heritage of Blaenau Gwent while enjoying the distinctive landscape of the South Wales Valleys.

They uncover the contrast between the affluence of the owners and the hardships faced by the working classes.

Leaflets, edited from The Industrial Archaeology of Blaenau Gwent ¨C an extensive history of the Blaenau Gwent ¨C have been printed to show the trails.

The trails range from easy strolls to strenuous walks varying in length from two to six miles.

Each trail forms a link that enables people to join two or more together to form longer walks.
